Prerequisites

The course is compulsory for the PhD students of Copenhagen Business School’s Department of
Economics, but also open to other PhD students.


Aim

Upon completion of the course, the students should have:

- Gained an understanding and be aware of the nature and scope of advanced research in
social sciences.

- Learned how to effectively plan, structure and manage a research project at an
advanced level, including undertaking critical appraisal of relevant literature and apply
critical judgment and discrimination.

- Developed the ability to operate independently on a research project and exercise
appropriate judgment in the selection of relevant material.


Course content

The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary training to undertake and
manage research projects at an advanced level in empirical research.


Teaching style

The course will consist of three lectures (3x2 lecture hours), two by Professor Lau and
one by Professor Romero Morales. The lectures are being delivered during the first
week of the course. The students will then have five weeks to write a short research
proposal of no more than 2,000 words explaining the key ideas and methods in their
proposal. The students will present their research proposals at a half‐day workshop
attended by Professor Lau and Professor Romero Morales.

The date of the half-day workshop will be announced as soon as possible.


Learning objectives

Exam

In order to pass the course the students have to prepare and present a short research
proposal that is related to the topic of their PhD thesis. The student presentations at the
workshop are being video recorded, and the written proposals and oral presentations
are being assessed by their respective supervisors.
