Economics of Ideas, Innovation, & Entrepreneurship

Participants must be at PhD level (or the equivalet) and enrolled in a PhD School

Aim
This three-day course develops a synthetic framework and overview of the economics of ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Course content
The first day of the course provides an overview of the economics of cumulative innovation systems, with a specific focus on the role of institutions (such as open science and intellectual property rights) play in shaping the innovation production function. 

The second day of the course will focus on the foundations of entrepreneurial strategy, with a specific focus on the role of entrepreneurial choice under uncertainty. 

The final day of the course  will focus on emerging empirical methods for conducting research on innovation-driven entrepreneurial systems and the drivers and consequences of entrepreneurial strategy.

Teaching style
The sessions include a mixture (and explicit comparisons of) both theoretical and empirical research, as well as opportunities for feedback on specific research projects and proposals.

9 am - 5 pm all three days

Learning objectives
The course emphasizes how the unusual characteristics of ideas can result in social inefficiency, and how the microeconomic and institutional environment influences the gap between private and social welfare.
