Course content

This PhD course makes up the 4th module (out of 6 modules) in the Nord-IB PhD programme. The first half of the module (1½ day) takes place at the Copenhagen Business School the second half (also 1½ day) at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg. The course is taught by scholars from these two research institutions.

The course covers different aspects of International Business as it unfolds in an emerging economy context. Hence, the following research questions are addressed: What do we mean by ‘emerging economies’? Do they have common traits that influence how companies from these economies internationalize? Do mainstream theories of firms’ internationalization apply to emerging economy firms, or do we need new or modified theories? As an important part of FDI by emerging economy firms the course focuses on FDIs driven by strategic asset seeking and development. A case in point is the acquisition of Volvo Car Corporation (from the Ford) by the Chinese company Geely in 2010 and the subsequent development of these assets.
